Washington DC (USA) | Jagran News Desk: One person was killed while five were injured on Thursday night in a shooting on the streets of Washington DC, Reuters quoted the police as saying.

The incident took place in the 1300 block of Columbia Road NW, according to reports. The injured were transported to area hospitals.

ABC affiliate WJLA-TV posted images on Twitter of ambulances carrying victims from the scene and said that there had been a “massive” police response at the intersection of 14th and Columbia streets north of the city’s downtown.

According to the police, the incident was reported at around 10:06 pm on Thursday. Two of the victims were in critical condition, the police added.

This is yet another incident when a gunman opened fire in the US. Earlier, at least seven persons, including three officers, were killed and 20 injured when a gunman opened fire at random in the second mass shooting in the US State of Texas last month.

The shooting - the 38th mass killing by firearms in the US this year - occurred in the West Texas cities of Midland and Odessa.

The gunman, who was white and in his mid-30s, was shot dead by police at the Cinergy movie theatre after a chase. However, the police did not identify the shooter by his name.

According to a report, firearms caused nearly 40,000 deaths in the US in 2017, which was highest in 50 years.
