Washington (USA) | Jagran News Desk: The US on Thursday blacklisted South Africa’s Gupta family and imposed sanctions on them over ‘widespread corruption’ and ‘bribery’.

“The Gupta family leveraged its political connections to engage in widespread corruption and bribery, capture government contracts, and misappropriate state assets,” Sigal Mandelker, Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence was quoted by AFP as saying.

“Treasury's designation targets the Guptas' pay-to-play political patronage, which was orchestrated at the expense of the South African people,” she added.

The Gupta family is a wealthy Indian-born family in South Africa. It owns a business empire spanning computer equipment, media and mining. The family has been the focus of widespread scrutiny because of its close ties to Jacob Zuma during his Presidency.

The ties, however, have led to widespread claims of corruption.

They are also accused of using their friendship with President Zuma to control cabinet appointments and public contracts for their private benefit.

However, the Guptas and President Zuma have denied from any wrongdoing. They also South Africa for the United Arab Emirates after President Zuma fell from power.
