Moscow (Russia) | Jagran News Desk: A massive earthquake of 7.5-magnitude struck the Kuril Islands in Russia on Wednesday, reported news agency AFP quoted United States Geological Survey (USGS) as saying

It said that the quake hit at a depth of 59 kilometres (37 miles) and the US National Tsunami Warning Center is "analyzing the event to determine the level of danger". A tsunami watch has also been issued for Hawaii.

It added that hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) of the quake's epicenter.

The Kuril Islands are 3,700 miles from Hawaii.

According to reports, the first tsunami wave is due at 10.42 pm local time and the Hawaiin authorities are trying to determine what threat the tsunami can cause to the island.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said earthquakes of this strength in the past have caused tsunamis far from the epicenter. A tsunami watch was issued for Hawaii but the center said it was still investigating if there was a threat to the islands.

The US National Tsunami Warning Center also still was analysing the event to determine the level of danger for Alaska and the US West Coast.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was a stronger 7.8 magnitude and may cause a slight change of sea levels around Japanese coasts.
