Death toll rises to 17 in Nepal bus accident, 15 rescued
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: At least 17 people have lost their lives while several others were injured in Nepal on Wednesday after a bus fell off a road in Arghakhanchi district, reported ANI. The accident occurred in the evening after the bus skidded off the road and fell 400-metre in Sandhikharka region of Arghakhanchi. The ill-fated bus was heading towards Butwal from Sandhikharka before it fell off the road. Meanwhile, around 15 passengers have been rescued so far and have sent to the hospital.
Speaking to Doordarshan, a Nepal Police spokesperson of Province No.5 Nabrej Pokharel has said that the relief and rescue operation is underway and 17 bodies have been recorded so far. The injured have been rushed to Butwal for treatment while The identities of the deceased passengers are yet to be ascertained.
"We have identified 14 bodies -- six male, five female, three children. However, three are yet to be ascertained," said Chief District Officer Bijaya Raj Poudel. "Search and rescue operation is still underway which involves security personals along with the help of locals," he added.
Accidents are common on Nepal's poorly maintained roads, with the number increasing during the festival season when the highways are far busier and public transport overcrowded.
Earlier on November 4, at least 17 people were killed while 108 others were injured after a bus en route to Kathmandu from Dolakha district skidded off-highway and fell 100-metre down on Sunokoshi River. The cause of the crash was attributed to speeding.
In yet another incident on November 3, around 16 people died and several passengers sustained injuries in Nepal’s Sindhupalchowk district after a bus en route to Kathmandu from Maga Deurali area of Dolakha village skidded off Araniko highway and plunged into Sunkoshi river at Sakute area. The bus was carrying 34 passengers at the time of the incident.
