Earlier on Friday, the Chinese embassy in Israel had responded to the criticism by the US secretary of state Mike Pompeo during his visit to Israel last week. It called his remarks that China had concealed information about the COVID-19 from the world as "absurd".

In a statement, the embassy noted that "scientists still haven’t identified the origin of COVID-19." It further added that the US is currently the epicentre of the deadly-virus.

The embassy also referred to Pompeo's warning to Israel regarding Chinese investments. During his visit, Pompeo had said that such investments could pose security risk, especially in infrastructure.

Wei expressed hope to strengthen ties between China and Israel.

“China is a law-abiding, responsible country, and should be trusted," he told haaretz.com adding, "Throughout history, certain groups of people have been accused with spreading plagues more than once. It’s despicable and should be condemned. The disease is the enemy of the entire mankind, and the world should fight it together."

The ambassador is believed to be survived by his wife and son.
