184 countries 'going through hell': Trump blames China for coronavirus spread
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: US President Donald Trump has doubled down on China for failing to contain the coronavirus at its origin, saying it has left 184 countries going through hell.
The statement by the President comes as several American lawmakers demanded steps to reduce dependence on Beijing for manufacturing and minerals.
Trump has been publicly blaming China for the worldwide spread of the pandemic and has launched an investigation regarding this matter. He also indicated that the US is looking at "a lot more money" in damages from China than USD 140 billion sought by Germany from Beijing for the "invisible enemy."
"It's in 184 countries, as you hear me say often. It's hard to believe. It's inconceivable," Trump said on Tuesday.
"It should have been stopped at the source, which was China. It should have been stopped very much at the source, but it wasn't. And now we have 184 countries going through hell,” he added.
Leaders of the US, Germany, and the UK believe that deaths and destruction of the global economy could have been avoided if China had shared the information about the virus in early phases.
The virus which originated in the Chinese city of Wuhan in mid-November has claimed the lives of over two lakh and infected over 3.1 million globally. The largest number of deaths are in the US with nearly 59,000 deaths and over one million confirm cases of COVID-19.
The outbreak in the US has put Trump under pressure from American lawmakers to decrease US dependence on Beijing and seek compensation from China.
The United States is cent percent import-dependent for rare earths as well as 13 other metals and minerals on the US Government Critical Minerals List and more than 75 percent import reliant for an additional 10 minerals.
