New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Twitter on Saturday said that hackers had accessed the internal servers by using the credentials of its employees. Last week, a number of high profile Twitter accounts including that of US presidential hopeful Joe Biden, Tesla CEO Elon Musk, Microsoft Co-founder Bill Gates and of Apple were simultaneously hacked. The attackers posted fake bitcoin deals from their accounts.

"We believe attackers targeted certain Twitter employees through a social engineering scheme. They manipulated a small number of employees & used their credentials to access Twitter’s internal systems, including getting through our two-factor protections," Twitter said in its statement.

The hackers also downloaded the personal information of at least eight accounts using Twitter's "Your Twitter Data" tool, the micro-blogging site said, adding that it was in direct contact with these account owners.

"For up to eight of the Twitter accounts involved, the attackers took the additional step of downloading the account’s information through our "Your Twitter Data" tool. We are reaching out directly to any account owner where we know this to be true," Twitter said.

The unidentified attackers had accessed tools used by Twitter's internal support teams to hack as many as 130 accounts. They even initiated password reset and posted tweets from 45 of those accounts.

"As of now, we know that they accessed tools only available to our internal support teams to target 130 Twitter accounts. For 45 of those accounts, the attackers were able to initiate a password reset, login to the account, and send tweets," the social media company added.
