New Delhi | Jagran Technology Desk: Banking on the huge void left after the ban of instant video-sharing app TikTok, Facebook-owned Instagram has decided to launch a “reel” feature in India, using which Instagrammers will be able to post short video-music remixes on the lines of TikTok.

The feature was earlier launched in Brazil in the month of March, as a testing-feature by Instagram. But since India remains a big market with a sudden void left in the instant-video sharing segment, the company has decided to roll out this feature in India as well. The feature will be rolled out in phases all across India.

How to post Instagram reels?

There is no standalone app in place for this, as Instagram has integrated the Reel feature in its ‘Story’ segment itself, using which a user will be able to shoot a fifteen seconds video and add music and related facial filters to it.

Reports in Brazilian media show, that the Instagram Reels, much like Instagram Posts and Stories, get displayed in the ‘search’ section, depending on whether the account of a user is Public or not.

India is a huge market

TikTok had over 120 million active monthly users until it was banned by the govt citing the issues related to National security. Instagram, in comparison, has 88 million active monthly users.

By rolling out Instagram Reels, the company intends to expand its user base far and wide, deep into the countryside, much like TikTok.

The users are already shifting to other homegrown apps such as Chingari and Mitron, and thus the urgency shown by Facebook-owned Instagram in rolling out the Reel feature seems likely by the company.

Much before TikTok was banned, the feature was already in the testing pipeline. However, the decision of the government to ban Chinese apps has simply pushed the company to release this much bankable feature earlier than expected.
