Google and Apple join hands to develop technology to help health agencies protect user privacy
New Delhi | Jagran Tech Desk: Google and Apple today announced that they have jointly built a technology that will help public health agencies, which are currently fighting the coronavirus pandemic, to protect user privacy of those who are the COVID-19 apps of those agencies.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai and Apple CEO Tim Cook took to Twitter to make the announcement Exposure Notification technology.
"The COVID19 Exposure Notification technology we built jointly with Apple is now available to public health agencies in support of their contact tracing efforts. Our goal is to empower them with another tool to help combat the virus while protecting user privacy," tweeted Pichai.
Cook also said that the technology will help public health agencies make their COVID-19 apps more effective and also help protect user privacy.
"Technology can help health officials rapidly tell someone they may have been exposed to COVID-19. Today the Exposure Notification API we created with @Google is available to help public health agencies make their COVID-19 apps effective while protecting user privacy," Cook tweeted.
As per reports, the API was originally debuted as a joint-contact tracing software tool, but was later renamed Exposure Notification to more accurately reflect its functionality.
With Google and Apple providing, the publich health agencies will be able to develop their own contact tracing apps.
The Indian government, which has been praised by global agencies for its handling of the pandemic, has launched Aarogya Setu app to connect essential health services with the people over the fight against COVID-19.
The mobile application helps users identify whether they are at risk of COVID-19 infection. It also provides people with important information, including ways to avoid coronavirus infection.
The app is aimed at augmenting the initiatives of the Centre, particularly the Department of Health, in proactively reaching out to and informing the users of the app regarding risks, best practices and relevant advisories pertaining to the containment of COVID-19.
