New Delhi | Jagran Technology Desk: Amid the coronavirus pandemic , the Aarogya Setu app launched by the government to trace positive COVID-19 patients, has become an obligatory for travel in any part of the country amid the lockdown.

But, now, the Aarogya Setu app could become a key facilitator for travelling in the country even after the coronavirus lockdown period. Media reports suggest that once the lockdown period is over in individual states, the Aarogya Setu app will be used in issuing a self-validating centralized e-pass for the inter-state travel.

The reports of the increasing importance of this app emerge after the Indian Railways made it mandatory for all the passengers to have the Aarogya Setu installed on their phones, which is right now applicable to Shramik and special passenger trains.

“Indian Railways is going to start few passenger train services. It is mandatory for passengers to download Aarogya Setu app in their mobile phones, before commencing their journey,” the Indian Railways had said in a tweet at the time. Tickets can only be booked via the IRCTC website.

These steps were taken considering that the travel of a person is linked to his health also and the health data is not only logged but also can be helpful in indicating a possible health threat.

According to a report by News18, the Aarogya Setu app could be used for the self certification for the inter-state travel, after which an e-pass will be confirmed, which means that before any travel a person must certify his health with the app.

However, till now there is no clarity whether this self-certification process also involves sharing data about the travel details—destination, time and date of travel, mode of transport etc. The government has not even highlighted whether those crossing the borders daily need this app in their phones, or it will be mandatory for all modes of travel or limited to some.

For these answers, the government will meet with all the stakeholders in the coming days to work out how this can, if at all, work.
