New York | Jagran Sports Desk: Rafael Nadal on Sunday defeated Daniil Medvedev by 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 4-6, 6-4 to win his 19th Grand Slam title.

The 33-year-old Spanish left-hander moved one shy of Roger Federer's all-time men's record 20 Grand Slam triumphs and became the second-oldest New York champion in the Open era after Ken Rosewall in 1970 at age 35.

Nadal was the favourite to win the final and started off with comfortable victories in the first two sets.

However, Medvedev, aiming to win his maiden US Open title, gave a tough fight to the 33-year-old Spaniard to set the game beautifully.

The 23-year-old Russian fifth seed gave a massive scare to Nadal as he shifted styles and won the next two sets in the enthralling match. With the fourth set tied, there was a chance for Medvedev to create an upset and repeat yesterday's script where Canada's teen sensation Bianca Andreescu shocked US' tennis ace, Serena Williams.

However, in the fifth set, Nadal, with his resilient attitude, continued his natural attacking game and finally overcame the obstacle to breeze away to his fourth US Open crown.

Earlier, Nadal defeated Italy's Matteo Berrettini by 7-6, 6-4, 6-1 in the semi-final match. The match was played at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The first set was a closely fought affair as both Nadal and Berrettini went back and forth to maintain the intensity of the match.

Both players were in no mood to lose the momentum and in the end, Nadal managed to win the set by the slightest of margins. He took the first set 7-6 in 74 minutes.

Italian Berrettini came out all guns blazing in the second set and he managed to take a 3-2 lead over Nadal in the set.

However, the world number two came strongly to level the set at 3-3, and in the end, he ended up winning the set 6-4.

The last set of the match was a one-sided one, as the 33-year-old Nadal completely dominated his Italian opponent.

He just dropped one game in the set and ended up winning it 6-1.
