New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: Tokyo Olympics, which has been postponed to next year, will be held from July 23 to August 8 in 2021. The new dates of Tokyo Olympics were agreed on Monday between the International Olympic Committee and local organizers, said a report from Japan's Kyodo News agency.

Similarly, the paralympic games will be held from August 24, 2021 till September 5, 2021.

The Tokyo President Yashiro Mori has warned the international federations that it will be a major challenge in deciding who covers the additional cost arising from the postponement of the Olympic Games.

The announcement of postponing the global event was made by IOC and organising committee last week after IOC president Thomas Bach had a telephonic conversation with Japan Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

The Tokyo Olympic Games were earlier slated to be held from July 24 to August 9, while the Paralympic Games were scheduled to be held from August 25 to September 6.

On 24 March, the International Olympic Committee and the Tokyo Organising Committee of the Olympic and Paralympic Games (Tokyo 2020) announced the postponement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020, IOC wrote on Twitter.

It was the first instance that the summer Olympics was postponed in 124 years.

"After his telephone talks with International Olympic Committee President Thomas Bach, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe spoke to the press and explained that the two have agreed that the Tokyo Olympic Games would not be cancelled and the games will be held by the summer of 2021," ANI quoted Shinzo Abe's office as saying.

The Olympic games had never been postponed in its 31 editions since the first modern Olympics in 1896, but they were cancelled thrice in 1916, 1940 and 1944 due to war.

The novel coronavirus which originated in China has affected over 725,000 people globally with at least 34,000 reports of death till Monday.
