New Delhi l Jagran Sports Desk: Defending champions Manchester City on Saturday defeated West Ham United 5-0 to kick off the new season in style. Raheem Sterling's hat-trick helped City edged past rival Liverpool's 4-1 win over Norwich City on Friday.

The breakthrough started after 25 minutes when Gabriel Jesus netted the first goal for City. Kevin De Bruyne's assist in the 51st minute helped Sterling score his first goal to double the lead. He went on to score two more goals to complete his hat-trick. Forward Sergio Aguero too scored a goal with a penalty. With the win, City has now won 15 premier league matches in a row.

Sterling has now become the first player to register a hat-trick on opening weekend after Didier Droga in 2010.

Pep Guardiola's men will now like to emulate the success of their previous season. They won the 2018-19 title race by a one-point margin against rivals Liverpool. Once again, they are among the favorites to win the title race, if they manage to do it, then it will be their third premier league title in a row.

Meanwhile, Tottenham Hostpur registered 3-1 win over Aston Villa as skipper Harry Kane scored twice. Burnley and Brighton Hove Albion registered 3-0 win over Southampton and Watford respectively. In other matches, Crystal Palace and Everton played goalless draw while Bournemouth and Sheffield United played 1-1 draw.
