Australian Open: Novak Djokovic defeats Dominic Thiem to win men's Singles final
New Delhi | Jagran Sports Desk: Serbia's Novak Djokovic has defeated Domic Theim to win record extending eighth Australian Open. He beat Thiem 6-4 4-6 2-6 6-3 6-4 to claim his 17th Grand Slam championship crown. His win on Sunday also guarantee his return to No. 1 in the FedEx ATP Rankings. Only Roger Federer (20) and Rafael Nadal (19) have won more major singles titles in the sport’s history.

Djokovic was the clear favourite to win the title and kicked off the match with an easy victory in the first set. However, Thiem with an aim to clinch his first Grand Slam title bounced back and took the second and third set.
The Serbian kept his nerves and found his rhythm back as he outclassed the Austrian in the fourth set 6-3, taking the match in the decider.
In the fifth set, Djokovic rose to the occasion and sealed the match in his favour.
"I would like to say this is a reminder that we should stick together more than ever," Djokovic told the 15,000 crowd after his win on Sunday.
"This tournament sets a high standard for all the others, definitely my favourite in the world, and I am blessed to hold this trophy once again," he added.
Djokovic, who claimed his eight Australian crown also extended his match record to perfect 13-0 in the 2020 ATP Tour season.
Thiem, who had also finished runner-up to Nadal at Roland Garros in 2018 and 2019, has now won seven of his 11 matches against the Big 3 of Nadal (2-2), Novak Djokovic (2-2) and Roger Federer (3-0) since the start of 2019.
