New Delhi | Jagran New Desk: Robert Vadra, husband of AICC General Secretary in charge of eastern UP, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, on Saturday, supported Rahul Gandhi by calling him the youth icon of the country who looked up to him for "direction".

Robert Vadra, in his post on Facebook, said, "there is so much to learn from you, Rahul. The Indian populace, which comprises 65 per cent of the young - (under 45 years), looks up to you and other young leaders for direction. You have shown tremendous strength of character and your decision to build the grassroots connect has been applauded by one and all".

He also urged Rahul Gandhi to connect with people and serve the nation in a better way.

The statement comes after Rahul Gandhi announced his resignation as the Congress president while taking "moral responsibility" of the party's crushing defeat in the Lok Sabha polls at the hands of the BJP.

The Congress is yet to schedule a meeting of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) to decide on his successor. But sources at the party on Friday indicated that it could take place next week once there is clarity on the Karnataka political situation.

However, Rahul Gandhi, after resigning as the Congress president, has categorically said that no one from the Gandhi family should be in the scheme of things while electing the next party president.

Following the Lok Sabha poll rout, the Congress has been struggling with an existential crisis in several states. After Rahul resigned as the Congress chief, the party has faced dozens of resignations in states ruled either by it alone or in coalition with other regional powers.
