New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: History-sheeter Vikas Dubey, who was on the run since the Kanpur ambush took place on the intervening night of July 2-3, in which eight policemen were killed, was arrested earlier on Thursday morning while he was going to Mahakal Temple in Madhya Pradesh’s Ujjain.

The 48-year-old gangster was reportedly spotted by the security guards of the temple who then informed the police immediately. As per reports, the gangster is being kept at Ujjain's Freeganj police station and may soon be handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Police.

In the video which was released by the news agency ANI from the site of arrest, the notorious gangster can be heard shouting, "Main Vikas Dubey hoon Kanpur wala (I am Vikas Dubey of Kanpur)."

Shortly after the notorious gangster was found in Madhya Pradesh dodging the UP Police and UP STF, opposition parties started training their guns at the Yogi government.

Hitting out the Yogi government, Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed incompetence and failure of the UP government by writing a tweet in Hindi. “Despite an alert, the gangster reaching Ujjain exposes the chinks in security and points to collusion”, Priyanka wrote on Twitter.

Questioning how the dreaded gangster was able to reach Ujjain despite a red-alert in the state and adjoining areas, the Congress leader referred to reports which expose that the local police officers in Kanpur had kept Vikas Dubey’s name out of the list of most wanted criminals to allege collusion.

While MP Home Minister Narottam Mishra confirmed the development, Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan in a tweet lauded the Madhya Pradesh police, saying, “Those who think their sins will wash away by going to Mahakal, they have not understood the Lord. Our government won’t spare any criminal.”

In another attack by the National President of the Indian Youth Congress, Srinivas B V, referring to the video circulating on social media in which criminal Vikas Dubey can be spotted walking out of the temple barefoot with the security guard walking beside him, he alleged, “From what angle does it appear that this terrorist Vikas Dubey has been arrested by the police. This was scripted. This video is the proof.”

Srinivas also responded to the home minister Narottam Mishra’s statement about the Madhya Pradesh police being on alert for the hunt, by calling it a “good joke”.

“The police were so alert that Vikas had to shout to identify himself. That is when the police got to know that Uttar Pradesh’s Vikas had appeared in Madhya Pradesh,” he added in the tweet.
