'Politicising sensitive matter': Govt hits out at Oppn over SC's order on job quota
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The Opposition on Monday created a ruckus in the Parliament over the Supreme Court ruling reservations for promotions in government jobs is not a ‘fundamental right’ and attacked the government for failing to defend reservation system
The Centre, however, slammed the Congress-led Opposition over the issue, saying they are trying to politicise a sensitive issue. “This is my charge that the Congress is politicising the sensitive issue,” said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi also urged Speaker Om Birla to expunge remarks made by opposition members against the government. Birla said he would look into the issue.
Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury and Kalyan Banerjee (TMC) targeted the government, saying there has been an onslaught on SC and ST reservation since the Modi government came to power.
Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot will make a statement on the issue in Lok Sabha in the afternoon.
The Supreme Court on Monday rejected the pleas challenging SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act, 2018 that rules out any provision of anticipatory bail for a person accused of atrocities against SC/STs.
After this, Congress’ Rahul Gandhi said that it is in the DNA of the BJP and the RSS to erase reservation from India, asserting that his party will not allow doing away of quota. “We will not allow reservation to be done away with, no matter how much Modi Ji or Mohan Bhagwat dream of it,” he said.
“The RSS and the BJP cannot stand the idea that Dalits, tribals and OBCs have reservations. They (the RSS and BJP) wake up every morning and this (reservation) irritates them, except it is in our Constitution, and these rights are guaranteed by our Constitution,” Gandhi added.
Gandhi also alleged and citied the examples of destruction of the Ravidas temple and the government's actions on the SC/ST sub-plan.
“Reservation is an important part of the Constitution. The main thing is that there is an assault on the Constitution. All institutions are being destroyed, we are not allowed to speak in Parliament and judiciary is pressured. So institutional structures are being destroyed and the main pillars of our Constitution taken down one by one,” he said.
