'PM Modi should reconsider economic package, lockdown should be lifted intelligently': Rahul Gandhi
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reconsider the Rs 20 lakh crore economic stimulus package, saying India's small businesses, farmers, labourers are in crisis.
Stressing that the lockdown should be lifted "intelligently and carefully", the former Congress President said that the most important thing right now is to "restart the demand and supply chain".
"Today our poor people need money, I am requesting Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he should reconsider this package. He should consider direct bank transfer, MGNREGA for 200 days and money to farmers directly, as these people are our future," Rahul Gandhi said in his press conference.
"I have heard that the reason behind not giving money is ratings. It is being said that if we increase our deficit today, the foreign agencies will downgrade our ratings," he added.
The Congress leader also suggested that the central government should directly put money into the bank accounts of the migrants workers and small farmers.
Gandhi further said that it is not the time to criticise someone and the needs to come together and handle the coronavirus pandemic together. He said that the government should lift the lockdown "intelligently and carefully" and "without sacrificing vulnerable people" including the senior citzens as it is the primary duty of everyone to protect them.
Rahul also said that Nyay could be implemented for temporary period which could help in increasing the demand side and to help the people in distress.
Rahul's statement comes days after PM Modi announced a special economic package for the poor, farmers and middle-class taxpayers of the country. He said that the economic stimulus package, along with the recent decisions by the Centre and Reserve Bank of India, will be worth Rs 20 lakh crore.
Asserting that our lives cannot continue revolving around coronavirus, PM Modi had also said that "lockdown 4.0" will come with a new face and new rules and regulations, hinting at further ease in restrictions.
