Piyush Goyal calls Abhijit Banerjee 'left leaning', says he backed Congress’ NYAY that people rejected
Pune | Jagran News Desk: Days after Nobel laureate Abhijit Banerjee criticised the state of Indian economy, Union Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday dubbed the Indian-American economist as “totally left leaning”. Goyal’s remarks came a media briefing in Pune.
“Abhijit Banerjee won the Nobel prize, I congratulate him. But you all know what his understanding is. His thinking is totally Left-leaning. He had praised the NYAY scheme effusively, but the people of India totally rejected his thinking,” Goyal said.
"I’m proud that an Indian has got the Nobel prize, but it’s not necessary that I should agree with his ideas. Especially when the people of this country rejected his suggestion, I think we don’t need to accept his ideas," he added.
Indian-American Abhijit Banerjee, who on Monday won the 2019 Nobel for Economics, said that Indian economy is on a shaky ground.
He added that the data currently available do not hold any assurance for the country's economic revival anytime soon.
The 58-year-old economist, who bagged the coveted prize jointly with his wife Esther Duflo and another economist Michael Kremer for his "experimental approach to alleviating global poverty", said he never thought he would get a Nobel so early in his career.
