New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Congress leader and former party chief Rahul Gandhi on Saturday at the Congress' Bharat Bachao Rally in New Delhi's Ramlila Maidan launched a staunching attack at the ruling BJP government and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the economy, farmers' distress and the current situation prevailing in the country.

He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has single-handedly destroyed the country's economy. He, in a vehement reaction also reiterated yesterday's statement over his 'Rape in India' remark and said that his name is not Rahul Savarkar and he will never apologise for speaking the truth.

"I was told in Parliament by BJP yesterday 'Rahul Ji, you gave a speech. Apologise for that.' I was told to apologise for something right. My name is not Rahul Savarkar. My name is Rahul Gandhi. I will never apologise for truth", he said addressing the rally.

"No one from Congress will apologise. It is Narendra Modi who should apologise. He should apologise to the nation. His assistant Amit Shah should apologise to the nation. I will tell you why they should that", he added asking the Prime Minister and Union Home Minister to apologise.

The Congress leader also ridiculed the new reforms brought by the BJP in the recent times to revive the nosediving economy and said, "Today, GDP (Gross Domestic Product) growth is at 4%, that too even after they (BJP) changed the way to measure GDP. If GDP is measured following the previous method, it will be just 2.5%".

"There was a time when this country was growing at 9%, people spoke of the success story of China and India... called us 'Chindia'... but look at us today. People are standing with onions in their hands. Onions have reached Rs 200 a kg."

“Our enemies wanted our strong economy to be destroyed. Wanted to make us weak as a nation. But enemies were not needed. Our prime minister - Narendra Modi - has destroyed our economy.

"Why do you see us introducing MSPs in whichever states we are coming to power? It is because we know that this country can only recover and be strong when our farmers earn well”.

"Narendra Modi Ji came and banned 500 and 1000 rupee notes...fooled you all by saying that this was done to remove black money. But what happened? Till today the economy has not been able to recover from it," he added.

Rahul also accusedPM Modi of taking money from the poor and giving contracts worth of lakh of crores to Adani and said, "Narendra Modi has made you all poor by taking money from your pockets, but on the other hand, he has given 100s of contracts, worth 1 lakh crore, to Adani. Would you not call this theft and corruption?".

“TV par koi ek 30 second ka advertisemnet aata hai, vo lakhon ka aata hai. Narendra Modi TV par din bhar dikhte hain roz. Iska paisa kaun de raha hai? Iska paisa vo log de rahe hain jinko Narendra Modi apka paisa cheen kar de rahe hain”, he added.

He also put an accusation on the BJP government for creating a divide between religions hinting at the Abrogation of Article 370 from Kashmir and in the northeast region where thousands of people are on roads protesting against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act, passed recently by the Parliament.

He said, “The country knows the situation today. They work to create divides - between religions - in J&K, in the northeast. Go to Assam, Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh. Go & see what Narendra Modi did there, he has set ablaze those regions”.

The Congress’ MP from Wayanad also questioned the role of media and said that “Under Congress’ rule media channels were allowed to show the bad works of the government also and were allowed to speak against any of government's work, but today the media channels are not allowed to raise their voice against the government”, adding “the media holds responsibility, but today they have forgotten their duty”.
