Bhopal | Jagran News Desk: Madhya Pradesh Governor Lalji Tandon passed away on Tuesday at the age of 85, confirmed his son Ashutosh Tandon. 

In a tweet this morning, his son Ashutosh announced that Lalji Tandon passed away on Tuesday. "Babuji nahi rahe (My father is no more)," he tweeted. 

Tandon's health condition had deteriorated over the last few days and he was undergoing treatment at the Medanta Hospital in Lucknow since June 11The doctors had earlier said that Tandon's lungs have deteriorated and his kidney and liver were not functioning properly. 

However, the hospital in a bulletin on Monday had said that Tandon is "now stable and still on critical care ventilator", adding that he was difficulty in urination and had fever.

"The condition of Governor of Madhya Pradesh, Lalji Tandon (in file pic) is stable. He is still on critical care ventilator support through the tracheostomy team of medical experts at the hospital," Medanta Lucknow Medical Director Dr Rakesh Kapoor was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

As per the health bulletin, Tandon had "developed internal abdominal bleeding for which an emergency operation was performed. The operation was successful and he was shifted to ICU under strict supervision of medical experts".

The hospital had also said that Tandon's COVID-19 sample report came out negative at the time of his admission.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief over Tandon's demise. "Shri Lalji Tandon will be remembered for his untiring efforts to serve society. He played a key role in strengthening BJP in Uttar Pradesh. He made a mark as an effective administrator, always giving importance of public welfare. Anguished by his passing away," PM Modi tweeted.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also expressed grief and tweeted, "Grieved to hear the news of the demise of Madhya Pradesh Governor Shri Lalji Tandon. With his death, the country has lost a qualified administrator and a great social worker. I pray to God for peace of the departed soul. My condolences to the bereaved family". 

Tandon was a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was appointed as the Governor of Madhya Pradesh on July 20, 2019, replacing Anandiben Patel. He was appointed as the 22nd Governor of Madhya Pradesh. 

Meanwhile, the Rashtrapati Bhavan had earlier announced that Uttar Pradesh Governor Anandiben Patel will take the additional charge of Madhya Pradesh following Tandon's illness. "The President of India is pleased to appoint Anandiben Patel, Governor of Uttar Pradesh, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Madhya Pradesh, in addition to her own duties, during the absence on leave of Lalji Tandon," the Rashtrapati Bhavan had said in a statement earlier.  

Previously, Tandon had also served as the Governor of Bihar where he was praised for streamlining academic activities of the state universities. He was also a member of the Uttar Pradesh Vidhan Parishad and served as Urban Development Minister of Uttar Pradesh under the Mayawati and Kalyan Singh governments.
