Mumbai | Jagran News Desk: A day after Devendra Fadnavis was elected at the Leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly, BJP MP Anant Kumar Hegde stoked a controversy by saying that Fadnavis was made Maharashtra Chief Minister despite lacking majority to save to prevent central funds worth Rs 40,000 crore from being misused. However, Fadnavis denied the claim saying that no such decision was taken by him.

Hegde, while addressing a gathering Karnataka’s yellapur on Sunday, said that the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maha Vikas Aghadi government could have misused that fund.

“You all know our man in Maharashtra became Chief Minister for 80 hours. Then, Fadnavis resigned. Why did he do this drama? Didn't we know that we don't have majority and yet he became Chief Minister. This is the question everyone is asking,” the BJP MP had said.

‘Had you been good to us, this wouldn’t have happened’: Uddhav Thackeray as Fadnavis gets elected as Leader of Opposition in Assembly

“A Chief Minister has access to around Rs 40,000 crore from Centre. He knew if Congress-NCP-Shiv Sena government comes to power it would misuse funds meant for development. So it was decided that there should be a ‘drama’. Fadnavis became Chief Minister and in 15 hours he moved Rs 40,000 crore back to Centre,” he added.

The sensational claim from Hegde comes days after Devendra Fadnavis’ resignation as Chief Minister of Maharashtra. The BJP, along with NCP’s Ajit Pawar, had formed the government but the two leaders stepped down last week before a floor test ordered by the Supreme Court could determine if their government had majority support.

Fadnavis, however, denied the charge saying that no such decision was taken by him. "No such major policy decision has been taken by me as CM. All such allegations are false," he said.

After this Uddhav Thackeray, who is leading the Maha Vikas Aghadi (alliance of Shiv Sena-NCP-Congress), formed the government in the state. The party has the support of 169 MLAs in the 288-member Maharashtra Assembly.

Meanwhile, Fadnavis was elected as Leader of Opposition of Maharashtra Assembly on Sunday. Speaker Nana Patole made the announcement in the House. He said that the BJP is being accorded the status of opposition party in the Assembly and Fadnavis would be the new Leader of Opposition.
