Pondicherry | Jagran Politics Desk: The exit polls on Thursday predicted a close contest between the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress in the union territory (UT) of Puducherry where polling for the 33-member legislative assembly was held on April 6.

According to the India Today-Axis My India exit poll, the BJP will win 20-24 seats while the Congress will get 6-10 seats. Meanwhile, Republic Jan Ki Baat exit poll has said that BJP and Congress will get 16-20 and 11-13 seats respectively.

Meanwhile, ABP C-Voter exit poll has predicted 21 seats for BJP and eight for Congress. On the other hand, Times Now-C Voter exit poll has said that BJP will get 19-23 seats and Congress will emerge victorious on 6-10 seats.

In Puducherry, V Narayanasamy-led Congress was in power till February this year. However, it lost the trust vote ahead of the assembly elections after several of its MLAs left the Congress and joined the BJP.

Later, the grand old party claimed that it will win the upcoming elections in the UT and accused the BJP-led central government of trying to topple its government in Puducherry.

"A government elected by the people has been toppled by the BJP, NR Congress and the AIADMK, In the coming elections, the people of Puducherry will teach the opposition parties a lesson," Narayanaswamy had said after losing the trust vote in Puducherry.

However, the BJP had refused to form the government in the UT, saying it will form the government in Puducherry under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership after the assembly elections.

"The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will form a government with BJP and its alliance partners All India NR Congress and All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam in May and build a new bright future for the people of Puducherry," BJP state unit president V Saminathan had said.

The assembly elections in Puducherry were held in a single phase on April 6 while the fate of the candidates will be declared on May 2.
