With hopes to retain power in Assam, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA alliance will face a direct contest from the Congress and "mahajooot" alliance. The BJP, under the leadership of Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, had first come to power in 2016, ending the 15-year-old Congress rule and would hope to continue its performance.
The saffron party has also allied with the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the United People's Party Liberal (UPPL). However, the BJP ahead of the polls has suffered a massive setback after its ally Bodoland People's Front (BPF) joined the "mahajooot" alliance.
This year, Assembly Elections in Assam will be held in three phases -- March 27, April 1 and April 6 -- while the counting of votes will take place on May 2. In the first phase, 47 constituencies will go for polls while voting will be held on 39 seats in the second phase and 40 seats in the third phase.
