New Delhi | Jagran Business Desk: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who presenting the budget 2020-21 in the Parliament on Saturday, underscored government's ambition to make the farming sector competitive and said that the government is committed to doubling farmers income.

"For sector comprising agriculture, allied activities, irrigation and rural development, an allocation of Rs 2.83 lakh crores has been made for 2020-21," Sitharaman said in her speech.

Here are the announcements made by the government for the farming sector:

* Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said that the farm markets need to be liberalised, adding that government will propose hand-hold farmers.

* A 16-point action plan will be set by the government for the farmers, announced Nirmala Sitharaman.

* Government will also insure 6.11 crore farmers under the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojna. 

The government allocated Rs 15 lakh crore for Krishi Credit scheme.

* Sitharaman also announced that Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha avem Utthan Mahabhiyan (PM KUSUM) to be expanded to provide 20 lakh farmers in setting up standalone solar pumps.

* The Finance Minister also said that Food Corporation of India and Warehousing Corporation of India to build warehousing facility on their land.

'Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha evam Utthan Mahabhiyan' (PM-KUSUM) will be expanded to provide 20 lakh farmers in setting up standalone solar pumps.

Village Storage Scheme run by Self Help Groups will provide holding capacity for farmers, and women in villages can regain their status as 'Dhaanya Lakshmi': Sitharaman.

* Government also approved Rs 3.6 lakh crore for Jal Jeevan Mission to provide safe drinking water to rural India and announced Kisan Rail and Kisan Udan -- farmer-centric railway and aviation services.
