New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: Vat Savitri is an annual observation by married women for the long life of their spouse. On this day, married women pray for the longevity and good health of their husbands. Vat Savitri is observed on Amavasya or during the new moon during the month of Jyestha, and thus also known as Jyestha Amavasya. According to the Gregorian calendar, it usually falls during the month of May. This day is considered sacred as Shani Jayanti also falls on the same day.

Vat Savitri puja vidhi
Married women should wake up early in the morning, take bath and wear clean clothes. They should also wear ornaments (solah-sringar).
Devotees eat root of Banyan (Vat) tree on this day as it is considered sacred.
Worship Banyan tree by offering vermilion, akshat, sandalwood and flower to the Banyan tree. Take minimum three rounds while reciting prayers. Tie a red or yellow coloured sacred thread (roli) around the tree.
Listening Savitri story or Satyavan holds special importance on this day.
Donate clothes, food or money to the needy.
Prepare special dishes and distribute prasad once the puja gets completed.
Importance of Vat Savitri
Vat Savitri Vrat hold speicial significance among married women. According to beliefs, Savitri saved her husband from the grip of Yamraj-- God of Death on this day. Thus, in order to ensure long life and well-being of their spouse, women worship Banyan tree and observe fast on this day.
The fast is observed as a token of love among married women for their husband. It ensures good health and prosperity of their partner.
Note: Banyan tree represents Trimurti: Lord Vishnu, Shiva and Brahma. Thus worshipping the tree is considered sacred.
