Sharad Purnima 2019: Importance of moonlight and do's and don'ts of this day
New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: Sharad Purnima marks the beginning of the harvest festival and celebrated across the country on full moon day of Hindi Ashvin month. This year it is being celebrated on Sunday (October 13). On this day, we pray Moon-god and Maa Lakshmi (goddess of wealth and luck). Special beneficial rays from the moon fall on the earth surface during night and devotees keep kheer overnight and distribute it as prasad. The moonlight rays also boost mental and physical health and raise happiness and positivity. But there are some special things that should be kept in mind this night.
On Sharad Purnima, the moon is in Ashwini Nakshatra, with full of 16 Kalas. Such a position of the moon is formed only once a year. As per texts, Ashwini Kumar is the physician of the gods. He should also be offered Kheer with Moon on this night. Kheer should be kept in the moonlight and we should pray to Ashwini Kumar to increase the strength of our senses. Kheer should be eaten only after prayer.
Preparation of Kheer
Kheer made on Sharad Purnima is not just a delicacy. As per scriptures, it is divine medicine. It should be made from cow's milk and Ganges water. If possible, try to make these puddings in a silver vessel. The texts describe rice as the food of the gods. Mahalakshmi is also pleased with rice. In addition, saffron, cow's ghee and other types of dry fruits should also be used in this kheer. If possible, it should be made only in the light of the moon.

Moon is considered to be the controller of mind and water. Mental and physical fluctuations come from reducing and increasing the size of the Moon. From the special effects of the moon on Amavasya and Poornima, tides occur in the sea. The moon has a special positive effect on the aqueous part of our body when the moon leads to a movement in the sea.

There is also a tradition to practice passing a thread in the needle that is used to stitch clothes. While trying to put a thread in the needle, one has to look towards the moon. When direct light of the moon falls in the eye, it raises the brightness of the retina.
Sharad Purnima moonlight rays also reduce the pain of asthma patients. It is believed that when the moonlight rays of Sharad Purnima falls on the navel of a pregnant woman, the foetus gets healthier.
The importance of moonlight on Sharad Purnima is raised by consuming Kheer in a silver vessel under the light of the moon on this night. It drives away all physical problems and pains.
On this day, one should try to avoid lust. Instead, try to practice fast and involve in satsang that makes your body healthy, your mind happy and your intellect bright.
Tamasic food like meat, onion, garlic, etc. and all kinds of intoxication should also be avoided on the night of Sharad Purnima. As per astrology, Moon is considered lord of the mind, so intoxication and despair increase due to intoxication.
