New Delhi | Jagran Lifestyle Desk: International Yoga Day, which is simply known as ‘Yoga Day’, is celebrated on June 21 every year to mark the importance of Yoga and how beneficial it is for good health. Yoga is a physical, spiritual and mental practice that had originated in India and has been practised by people across the world for good physical and mental health.

The day is celebrated across the world on June 21 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed it during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in 2014. This year, we will be celebrating the sixth International Yoga Day.

Why we celebrate International Yoga Day on June 21?

International Yoga Day is celebrated on June 21 every year after PM Modi during his UNGA speech proposed it. The Prime Minister in his speech said that “Yoga embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and wellbeing”.

“Yoga is an invaluable gift of India's ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfilment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and the nature. By changing our lifestyle and creating consciousness, it can help in wellbeing. Let us work towards adopting an International Yoga Day,” PM Modi had said.

After this, the UNGA held informal consultations on the draft resolution and decided that International Yoga Day will be celebrated on June 21 every year. The June 21 was selected for International Yoga Day because it shares a special significance in many parts of the world. June 21 is also the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and it was also another reason for selecting it.

When was first International Yoga Day celebrated?

The first International Yoda Day was celebrated on June 21, 2015, across the world with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm, especially in India and a huge event was organised in Delhi’s Rajpath where nearly 36,000 people, including PM Modi, performed Yoga to spread its awareness.
