Woman in Kolkata, suffering from 'rare syndrome', discovers she is a 'man' after 30 years
Kolkata | Jagran News Desk: In a bizarre incident, a 30-year-old woman in Kolkata has found that she is a “man”. The woman is a resident of West Bengal’s Birbhum and has been married for the last nine years, reported news agency PTI.
The woman was suffering from abdominal pain and was getting treated at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Cancer Hospital in Kolkata when the doctors found out that she is a ‘man’ who is suffering from “testicular cancer”, reported PTI.
The doctors said that the woman was also diagnosed with “Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome” in which the person is a male but has all physical traits of a woman.
This syndrome is found only in one out of 22,000 people, the doctors noted while adding that her 28-year-old sister also underwent necessary tests following the revelation and was diagnosed with the same syndrome.
“From her appearance, she is a woman - starting from her voice, developed breasts, normal external genitalia. However, the uterus and ovaries have been absent since birth. She has also never experienced menstruation,” PTI quoted Dr Anupam Dutta, who conducted the person’s medical tests, as saying.
“We conducted clinical examinations, after she complained of abdominal pain, and found out she has testicles inside her body. A biopsy was conducted, following which she was diagnosed with testicular cancer, also called seminoma,” Dr Dutta added.
The person is stable now and is undergoing chemotherapy at the hospital. When asked about the person’s reaction, Dr Dutta told PTI that the woman is married to a man for almost a decade and has grown up to be a woman and “the couple have been advised to continue living their lives as they have been”.
Dr Dutta further revealed that one of the aunts from the maternal side of the person was also ‘suffering from the Androgen Insensitivity Syndrome’ which indicates that it is “probably in the genes”.
Dr Dutta also said that the couple tried to a have child but failed after several times. “As her testicles remained undeveloped inside the body, there was no secretion of testosterone. Her female hormones, on the other hand, gave the appearance of a woman,” Dr Dutta said, as reported by PTI.
