Noida | Jagran News Desk: Notorious gangster Vikas Dubey, who was accused in the killing of eight officials of Uttar Pradesh police, was gunned down on Friday morning. The police said that the vehicle which was carrying him from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident and Dubey tried to escape from the spot but was killed in the gunfight.

The police further said that four policemen, including an inspector posted in Nawabganj, were injured in the accident. 

Dubey, who was gunned down in the wee hours Friday, was caught by the police officials on Thursday at the Mahakal temple in Ujjain. Now reports have emerged that the notorious gangster was in Noida and has stayed at the house of a known criminal lawyer for his surrender.

According to reports by The Times of India and News18, Dubey, who was wanted in over 60 cases, was in Noida on July 5 and July 6 where he stayed at the house of a criminal lawyer. After staying in Noida for two days, Dubey headed to Kota where he stayed there for a night before heading to Ujjain.

What does the police have to say?

The police, meanwhile, has said that Dubey was going to the Mahakal temple in Ujjain where he was identified by the security personnel present there. 

Meanwhile, temple sources said that Dubey reached the temple gate in the morning and purchased a Rs 250 ticket from a counter near the police post. When he went to a nearby shop to buy prasad for the deity, the shop owner identified him and alerted police, PTI quoted the temple sources as saying.

Later the Madhya Pradesh Police said that Dubey was handed over to the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) who took his custody and left for Uttar Pradesh with him on Thursday.
