Lucknow | Jagran News Desk: Hours after the police gunned down history-sheeter Vikas Dubey in an encounter, the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) on Friday evening said that the vehicle in which they were travelling overturned after a "herd of cattle had come in front of it".

In a press release issued on Friday, the UP STF said that the driver of the car took a sudden turn after a heard of cattle came in front of it which led to the accident. The STF further said that Dubey took the advantage of the accident and snatched a pistol from a police personnel and tried to escape.

It said that the police tried to catch the notorious criminal alive but he continued to fire. He, however, got injured after the police "retalitaed in self-defence", the STF noted. 

"A herd of cattle had come in front of the vehicle due to which driver took sudden turn leading to accident. The police tried to go close to him to nab him alive but he continued to fire. Police retalitaed in self-defence," the STF said in a press release.  

"Taking advantage of the situation, Vikas Dubey snatched the pistol of inspector Ramakant Pachauri and got out of the vehicle. He started running away. The second vehicle coming from behind and STF DSP Tej Pratap Singh and other STF personnel stopped and were told that Dubey had run away with the firearm. They chased the gangster and he started firing at them. Thee STF personnel tried to catch him alive but had to fire in self-defence," the UP STF added.

The STF further said that they immediately took Vikas Dubey to the hospital for "first aid" but the doctors declared him dead after examination.

About Vikas Dubey's encounter:

Gangster Vikas Dubey was killed in an encounter on Friday after a police vehicle carrying him from Ujjain to Kanpur met with an accident and he tried to escape from the spot in Bhauti area. 

The police had earlier killed five members of Dubey's gang in separate encounters. While on July 3, two of his associates, Prem Prakash Pandey and Atul Dubey, were killed by police in an encounter in Kanpur, on July 8 the police killed another aide, Amar Dubey, who carried a reward of Rs 50,000, in an encounter in Maudaha village in Hamirpur district.

On July 9, two more aides of gangster Vikas Dubey, wanted in connection with the Kanpur ambush, were killed in separate encounters in Kanpura and Etawah districts. While Kartikeya alias Prabhat was killed in Kanpur when he tried to flee from police custody, another aide of Vikas Dubey, Praveen alias Bauwa Dubey, was shot dead in an encounter in Etawah.
