New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The Kanpur-based history-sheeter, Vikas Dubey, on Friday was killed in an encounter with the police while he tried to flee the spot after a car of the Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) that was bringing him back to Kanpur from Madhya Pradesh, overturned on a highway in UP.
According to the senior police officials, Vikas Dubey, taking advantage of the accident snatched a weapon from a policeman and tried to escape the custody. In retaliation, the police fired upon him and he was immediately rushed to the hospital where the authorities declared him dead. During the scuffle, 4 policemen were also injured.
Notorious gangster Vikas Dubey, the main accused in the killing of 8 policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, was arrested from Madhya Pradesh on Thursday. The history-sheeter was arrested while he was going to the Mahakal Temple in Ujjain. The security there identified him and informed the police immediately. He later confessed his identity to the police and was brought to the police station.
Vikas Dubey was absconding since Thursday night when he along with his henchmen killed eight policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur when they raided the house in which Dubey was hiding. The police came to arrest him on an attempt to murder charges after a complaint.
The police have also arrested two UP cops, including Chaubepur SHO Vinay Tiwari and Beat Incharge KK Sharma, who allegedly alerted Dubey about the raid. The police had also raised the bounty on Vikas Dubey to Rs 5 lakh.
A massive hunt was launched across Delhi, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and other nearby states after he escaped following the Friday's massacre. A manhunt was also launched by Bahraich Police in Indo-Nepal border areas amid intelligence inputs that the gangster may escape to the neighbouring areas.
The Uttar Pradesh police had set up 25 special teams to nab the notorious gangster, who has as many as 60 criminal cases registered against him. Posters of Dubey were put up across several states and a cash reward of Rs 1 lakh announced for any information regarding his whereabouts.
Who is Vikas Dubey?
The Uttar Pradesh police started searching for Vikas Dubey after a resident of Bikru village, Rahul Tiwari, lodged a case of attempt to murder against the notorious gangster. The police conducted raids in several places on the basis of the FIR filed by Rahul Tiwari.
Apart from this FIR of an attempt to murder case, Vikas Dubey has over 60 criminal cases lodged against him. The criminal cases against him include murder, robberies and kidnapping charges.
Vikas Dubey was also identified as the main accused in the murder of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Santosh Shukla, who was a minister of state (MoS). The dreadful criminal killed Santosh Shukla inside the Shivli police station in 2001. Two policemen also lost their lives during the attack. After committing this high-profile murder, Dubey, also known as Shivli's don, had surrendered before the court. However, Dubey was later acquitted from the murder charges by a session court.
He had also joined Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and was also elected as a member of Nagar panchayat. Vikas Dubey was also involved in the murder of Siddheshwar Pandey, the principal and assistant manager of Tarachand Inter College, in 2000. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in the murder of Siddheshwar Pandey.
