New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: For the time since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic in India, the difference between the number of recoveries and the number of active cases increased by one lakh.

According to the data available at the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the difference between the active number of coronavirus cases and the number of recoveries is 1,06,662.

Currently, the number of people recovered from the deadly pathogen is 3,09,713 while the number of active coronavirus cases in India is 2,03,051.

This comes a day after the country crossed the grim mark of five lakh coronavirus cases, becoming the fourth worst affected country in the world after the US, Brazil and Russia. The novel coronavirus took 110 days to affect one lakh people in India while just 39 days more to go past the five lakh-mark on June 27, according to an analysis by the Union Health Ministry.

The analysis further said that there has been a surge of 3,18,418 infections from June 1, the day when the "Unlock 1.0" -- the graded exit from the national lockdown -- came into effect.

The Health Ministry has also claimed that eight states, including Delhi and Maharashtra, account for 97 per cent coronavirus deaths and 85 per cent active caseload in India. The eight states are Maharashtra, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal.

Amid the alarming rise in the number of coronavirus cases in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday noted that India's recovery rate is rising, adding that the country is much better placed than many other nations due to lockdown and many initiatives taken by the government as well as a people driven fight.

The Prime Minister, however, cautioned that "people can't let their guard down against the deadly pathogen yet". "In fact, we have to be even more careful now. Wearing masks, following social distancing, avoiding crowded places remain important," PM Modi said.
