Record 28,701 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours take India's tally to 8.78 lakh, death toll tops 23,000 | Check state-wise list here
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: India's coronavirus tally on Monday corssed the 8.78 lakh-mark after the country reported its biggest single-day spike of 28,701 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, adding that 500 fatalities were reported during the same period.
According to the information available at the Union Health Ministry Website, the novel coronavirus has affected 8,78,254 while 23,174 have lost their lives to the deadly infection. As per the Health Ministry, there are 3,01,609 active coronavirus cases in India. Meanwhile, the recovery rate in the country is 63.01 per cent as 5,53,471 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.
As per the Health Ministry data, Maharashtra is the worst affected state in India with 2.54 lakh coronavirus cases and more than 10,000 deaths while Tamil Nadu is the second worst-hit state with 1.38 lakh COVID-19 and nearly 2,000 fatalities. The coronavirus cases in the national capital Delhi stands at 1.12 lakh while the death toll is 3,371.
Meanwhile, Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) on Monday said that 1,18,06,256 samples were tested for COVID19 till July 12, adding that 2,19,103 samples were tested on Sunday.
The coronavirus cases in India are rising at ana alarming rate. With over 8.74 lakh coronavirus cases, India is the third worst affected country in the world after Brazil and the United States. India had entered the list of top ten worst affected countries by coronavirus on May 24 and in just 40 days, the country became the third worst-hit nation in the world.
The government, however, has asserted that the situation in India is under control, appealing people to take precautions. Recently, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also reviewed the pandemic in India and directed the officials to maintain social distancing and personal hygiene to contain the dreadful infection from spreading.
