New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: India recorded highest single-day spike of 14,516 new infections during the last 24 hours taking the total coronavirus cases near the grim milestone of 4 lakh-mark.

The cases in the country reached 3,95,048 on Saturday, while the death toll also inches towards the 13,000-mark and reached 12,948 after 375 new fatalities were reported in the country during the day, according to the data by Union Health Ministry on Saturday morning. 

Of the total, 3,95,048 cases in the country, 1,68,269 are active cases while 2,13,831 people have been cured and discharged from the hospitals from across the country. With this the recovery rate in the country also improved to 54.12 per cent from 53.79 per cent yesterday. 

India has witnessed a huge spurt in cases during the last five days. From June 15 till today, the country has recorded 74,126 cases of coronavirus. 

Among the Indian states, Maharashtra with over 1.24 lakh cases tops the list of worst-hit states. With 142 deaths recorded during the day, the count of fatalities due to the infection reached 5,893. In Maharashtra, Mumbai with 64,068 cases is the worst affected city. The death toll in the city also reached 3,423 with 114 new fatalities in last 24 hours. 

The southern state of Tamil Nadu is the second worst hit state with 54,449 cases 666 people have succumbed to the dreadful infection so far. Tamil Nadu reported 2,115 new COVID-19 cases in last 24 hours while 41 people lost their life due to the coronavirus. 

Meanwhile, the coronavirus cases in the national capital breached the 50,000-mark and reached 53,116 after record 3,137 fresh coronavirus cases were reported from the city during the last 24 hours. The death toll in Delhi also crossed the 2,000-mark and reached 2,035 after 66 new fatalities. This is the first time Delhi has witnessed over 3,000 new infections in a day. The previous highest spike in fresh cases -- 2,877-- was recorded on June 18.
