New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Nalini Sriharan, the convict former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, has allegedly attempted suicide in Vellore women's prison on Monday, according to reports. Nalini has been lodged in Vellore women's prison and now her husband has demanded she be transferred from there.

According to a report published by India Today, her lawyer Pugalenthi said that Nalini had a faceoff with another life convict in the jail, who then raised the matter to the jailer. Following this, Nalini tried to commit suicide, the report citing her lawyer said.

Her lawyer also claimed that this was the first time she took such a step in the last 29 years of being in jail. "We want to know the real reason," her lawyer was quoted as saying by the website.

Nalini, lodged in the Special Prison for Women in Vellore for the last over 27 years, had recently been granted one month parole for the marriage of her daughter. Nalini, her husband Murugan, a Sri Lankan national and five others are serving life imprisonment for the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi by an LTTE suicide bomber during an election rally at Sriperumpudur on May 21, 1991.

Last year, she had moved Madras High Court, seeking a direction to Tamil Nadu Governor Banwarilal Purohit to release all the seven convicts as per the decision of the Tamil Nadu government cabinet in 2018, recommending their release under Article 161 of the Constitution. The please was rejected by the court.
