New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Former finance minister and senior BJP leader Arun Jaitley passed away at All India Institute of Medical Sciences. He was 66. Jaitley was admitted to the AIIMS earlier this month after he complained of restlessness. He was placed under observation at the hospital's Cardio-Neuro-Centre.
He was considered as one of the most prolific politicians of India, Arun Jaitley's demise triggered a wave of shock and grief with leaders cutting across political spectrum paying glowing tributes to the astute leader.
Here are the reactions from the political fraternity pouring condolences for former finance minister Arun Jaitley:
PM Narendra Modi condoled the demise of Arun Jaitley and said, ”Arun Jaitley Ji was a political giant, towering intellectual and legal luminary. He was an articulate leader who made a lasting contribution to India. His passing away is very saddening. Spoke to his wife Sangeeta Ji as well as son Rohan, and expressed condolences. Om Shanti”.
“Full of life, blessed with wit, a great sense of humour and charisma, Arun Jaitley Ji was admired by people across all sections of society. He was multi-faceted, having impeccable knowledge about India’s Constitution, history, public policy, governance and administration”.
“During his long political career, Arun Jaitley Ji held multiple ministerial responsibilities, which enabled him to contribute towards India’s economic growth, strengthening our defence capabilities, creating people friendly laws and enhancing trade with other nations”.
President Ram Nath Kovind on the demise of Arun Jaitley said, “Extremely saddened by the passing of Arun Jaitley after battling a long illness with fortitude and dignity. A brilliant lawyer, a seasoned parliamentarian, and a distinguished Minister, he contributed immensely to nation-building”.
Mamata Banerjee took to Twitter and said, "Extremely saddened at the passing away of Arun Jaitley Ji, after a battle bravely borne. An outstanding Parliamentarian & a brilliant lawyer, appreciated across parties. His contribution to Indian polity will be remembered. My condolences to his wife, children, friends & admirers”.
Congress expresses condolences over Jaitley' s death and said, “We are deeply saddened to hear the passing of Shri Arun Jaitley. Our condolences to his family. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of grief”.
Smriti Irani condoles Jaitley's death and said, “A stalwart who paid tribute to his simple beginnings by helping those with meagre means . Orator par excellence, legal luminary @arunjaitley ji served the Nation and sangathan with dedication and zeal. My tributes to him. Condolences to loved ones. Om Shanti”.
Suresh Prabhu said, ”Extremely sad to hear about passing away of our dear friend, legal brain, sharp mind, astute strategist, a seasoned politician, exemplary Parliamentarian, exceptional communicator, senior leader, a colleague of years - Arun Jaitley. Will always feel void, could never forget him and his contribution. Om Shanti”.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh condoles Jaitley's demise and said, “Deeply anguished by the demise of my friend and an extremely valued colleague Shri Arun Jaitley ji. He was a proficient lawyer by profession and an efficient politician by passion”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah cut short his visit to Hyderabad and is returning to Delhi, meanwhile condoling Arun Jaitley’s death he said, “Deeply pained by the demise of #ArunJaitley ji. It is like a personal loss for me. I have not only lost a senior party leader but also an important family member who will forever be a guiding light for me”.
Kapil Sibal condoling Jaitleys death referred him to as an old friend and a dear colleague and said,”Very sorry to learn that Arun Jaitley is no more . An old friend and a dear colleague will be remembered for his seminal contributions to the polity and as FM of India . As Leader of Opposition he was without match . He always stood steadfastly for his friends and for his party”.
Vice President Venkaiah Naidu refer Arun Jaitley’s death as an irreparable loss and said, “I am deeply shocked to learn about the demise of Shri Arun Jaitley,a long time dear friend and one of my closest associates. His death is an irreparable loss to the nation and a personal loss to me. I have no words to express my grief”. He also cancelled his visit to Nellore in Andhra Pradesh and is scheduled to rush to Delhi.
French Ambassador to India Alexandre Ziegler condoled Jaitley's death and said “On behalf of France, I offer our heartfelt condolences to the family and loved ones of Arun Jaitley ji. France stands with India and its people in this time of deep grief,”
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal says the country will miss "his governance skills" and tweeted “Untimely demise of former FM and senior leader Sh Arun Jaitley ji is a huge loss to the nation. A legal luminary and an experienced political leader known for his governance skills will be missed by the country. Thoughts and prayers with his family in this moment of grief. RIP”.
EAM Jaishankar said, "Deeply grieved at the passing away of Shri Arun Jaitley ji. A towering political figure who influenced an entire generation. Will miss our discussions, on politics as much as cricket,".
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman expressing her grief on the demise Arun Jaitley said, “No words can describe the loss of Shri Arun Jaitley. A mentor to many of us, a guide and moral support and strength. Have learnt so much from him. A fine large-hearted person. Always ready to help anyone/everyone. His intelligence, sagacity, astuteness have no match”.
Congress leader Shashi Tharoor condoles the demise of his 'DU senior', calls it a big loss for India and tweeted with a photo with Arun Jaitley, “Deeply saddened by the tragic passing of my friend&DelhiUniv senior @arunjaitley. We first met when he was at DUSU& I was President of StStephen’sCollegeUnion. Despite political differences we enjoyed a healthy mutual respect&debated his Budget often in LS. A great loss4India”.
Congress President Sonia Gandhi condoles Jaitley's demise and said, "Arun Jaitley ji had a long innings as a public figure, parliamentarian and a minister and his contributions to public life will forever be remembered".
Former President Pranab Mukherjee condoles Jaitley's death, calls him 'a voice with a reason'. He wrote, "Deeply saddened at the untimely passing away of Shri Arun Jaitley. Visited him just daybefore & prayed for his speedy recovery. He was a leader with deep intellect & knowledge, and a voice of reason. He will be dearly missed. My prayers with his family, friends & admirers".
