Amid spiralling cases of COVID-19, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday reviwed the coronavirus situation in the country and directed officials to reiterate the need to maintain social distancing and personal hygiene to contain the pandemic.

"PM directed that we must reiterate the need to observe personal hygiene & social discipline in public places. Awareness about COVID should be disseminated widely & a continuous emphasis on preventing spread of the infection should be laid," news agency ANI reported.

The prime minister also praised the efforts of the Centre and the state government authorities in containing the coronavirus pandemic in Delhi. The situation nearly got out of control in Delhi with the state government claiming community outbreak of coronavirus.

"PM appreciated the concerted efforts of the Centre, State and local authorities in containing the pandemic situation in Delhi. He further directed that similar approach should be adopted with other State Governments in containing the COVID-19 pandemic in entire NCR area," reported news agency ANI.

The review meeting was also attended by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Health Minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, Member of NITI Aayog, Cabinet Secretary and other senior officials of the central government to take stock of the situation.

India's COVID-19 cases cross 8 lakh-mark, over 22,000 deaths

In another record spike of cases, India registered 27,114 new infections during the last 24 hours taking the total toll of coronavirus past 8 lakh-mark. With the latest addition of cases, India's COVID-19 tally reached 8,20,916. 

The death also crossed the 22,000-mark and reached 22,123 after record 519 deaths were reported in the country during the last 24 hours. Of the total 8,20,916 cases, 2,83,407 are active cases, while 5,15,386 people have been cured and discharged from the hospitals across the country.
