New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Maharashtra on Saturday witnessed another record spike in coronavirus cases as the state recorded 5,318 new infections during the last 24 hours taking the total toll of the state to 1,59,133.

This is the highest single-day spike ever recorded in any state of the country. The increase in cases surpassed Friday's one-day highest figure of 5,024. The death toll in the state also rose to 7,273 in the state after 167 new fatalities were reported during the last 24 hours.

Of the total 1,59,133 cases, 84,245 people have cured and discharged from the hospitals across the state, with 4,430 patients were discharged in the last 24 hours. Meanwhile, the active cases in the state stood at 67,615.

So far, 8,96,874 people have been tested for the virus in Maharashtra. Out of 167 deaths reported on Saturday, 86 occurred in the last 48 hours and remaining had taken place earlier, the official said. The recovery rate in the state is 52.94 per cent while the case fatality rate is 4.57 per cent. 5,65,161 people are in home quarantine and 36,925 are in institutional quarantine.

Mumbai accounted for 1,402 new infection cases on Saturday, Pune city for 429 cases and Aurangabad city for 137 cases. In the larger Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Thane city reported 410 cases and Kalyan-Dombivali 514 cases. Sixty-four new deaths were reported from Mumbai alone. The MMR accounted for the highest 3,479 new cases on Saturday, taking the total in the region to 1,15,385.

Maharashtra, which is one of worst affected state in the country, will receive the first batch of the experimental COVID-19 drug Remdesivir, which is being manufactured in India by Hyderabad-based drugmaker Hetero under the brand name of COVIFOR.

COVIFOR is a generic brand of Remdesivir which is used for the treatment of COVID-19 in adults and children hospitalised with strong symptoms of the disease. 

India is now on the fourth spot globally after the US, Brazil and Russia with at least 5,15,465 cases. Over 15,600 COVID-19 patients have died in the country till date.
