Kollam | Jagran News Desk: In a chilling plot, a 27-year-old man allegedly killed his wife by letting a snake bite her in her sleep in Kerala’s Kollam district. The man, identified as Sooraj, has been arrested by the police and his accomplice.

Preliminary investigation has revealed that Sooraj had brought the viper to kill his 25-year-old wife Uthra from his friend Santhosh, who is a snake catcher, said Kollam Rural SP Harisankar.

As per initial reports, the incident took place on May 6 at Uthra’s house when Sooraj, with a pre-planned motive, brought a snake with him, hid it inside a bag and threw it on his wife, who was sleeping.

The police said that Sooraj watched the snake bite Uthra twice. Then on May 7 morning, he got out of the room as usual and her mother found her unconscious. Uthra was taken to the hospital where she was declared dead.

“He waited and watched the snake bite his wife twice. After this, he tried to put the snake in a container but failed. The snake escaped and went under the cupboard. He stayed awake all night. The next day, he left early and the parents of the woman found her dead. Later, the snake was also found from the room,” news agency ANI quoted the police as saying.

Uthra’s parents grew suspicious as their daughter was bitten by a snake in March as well. Following their complaint, the police launched an investigation and found that Sooraj had brought a snake in February to kill Uthra. However, she escaped the snakebite and was discharged from hospital and returned to her home.

The police also spoke about Sooraj’s accomplice Santhosh and said that he had been involved in illegal trade of the reptiles and the forest department which has been informed will file a separate case.

“He gained confidence from the first act. He used to watch YouTube videos to handle snakes and also learned it from his friend -- a snake catcher. The man took 98 sovereigns of gold and cash as dowry for most of the gold he sold. He wanted to get rid of his wife in anticipation of marrying another woman,” the police said, as reported by ANI.
