New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: A local court in Kerala on Monday cancelled the bail of Bishop Franco Mulakkal, accused of raping a nun and issues a non-bailable warrant against him.

Kottayam Additional District Court announced the decision on Monday. The accused is said to have missed the hearing which took place on July 1. Franco's lawyer claimed that he was stuck in a coronavirus containment zone in Punjab.

However, during today's ruling, a special prosecutor Jithesh Babu deposed before the court that the area where the accused lives in Punjab-the Jalandhar Civil Lines is not listed as a containment zone and also informed the court that the accused is trying to delay the trial unnecessarily.

Admitting the argument presented by the prosecution, the local court cancelled Bishop Franco Mulakkal's bail. The case was adjourned to August 13.

According to a report by TOI, the accused failed to appear before the court despite strict orders from the top judge. Additional district court Judge G Gopakumar also charged a separate case against those who stood as surety from not bringing the rape-accused bishop before the court.

The nun accused Mulakkal of sexual assault on the night of May 5, 2014,and also multiple times thereafter till September 23, 2016. Accusing him of raping her multiple times, the bishop has been charged with rape, wrongful confinement, unnatural offence and criminal intimidation.

As per the report by TOI, The victim had filed a complaint at the Kottayam police station over the sexual abuse from 2014-16 on June 27, 2018.  On June 28, her statement was also recorded. The charge sheet in the rape case was filed on April 9, 2019.

Earlier, huge protests have erupted in Kerala against the accused, demanding the arrest of the clergyman. A group of four nuns also joined the protests to show solidarity with the survivor.

However, the accused Bishop has dismissed the charges, claiming them as as "baseless and concocted".
