New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The bounty on notorious gangster Vikas Dubey, who has been on a run since Friday after allegedly killing eight policemen in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur, has been increased to Rs 2.5 lakh.

"The cash reward for the arrest of Vikas Dubey has been increased to Rs 2.50 lakh by UP Director General of Police HC Awasthy," Additional Director General Law and Order Prashant Kumar said on Monday.

The government had earlier announced a reward of Rs 50,000 for anyone who gave information about Dubey's whereabouts. The amount was later increased to Rs one lakh.

Eight policemen, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police, were killed when they went into a village in Kanpur in the early hours of Friday to arrest Dubey but instead walked into a trap set by the notorious gangster, who is wanted in over 60 criminal cases.

A Special Task Force (STF) is also investigating the matter along with officers from 40 other police stations.

Posters of Dubey have been put up in many areas including Kanpur, Kanpur Dehat, Unnao and adjoining districts, and also at a check-post near the India-Nepal border. Reports have it that Dubey was last traced to Auraiya and the police suspect he may have left UP and escaped to Madhya Pradesh or Rajasthan.

Meanewhile, the main aide of Dubey involved in the Friday attack was arrested in a pre-dawn encounter in Kanpur on Sunday. Dayashankar Agnihotri was injured in his leg in retaliatory firing by police after he tried to attack them and flee.

After being taken into custody, Agnihotri told reporters that Dubey had got a call from someone in the police department informing him about his imminent arrest, and after that he called his men for a face-to-face confrontation with the police.

Allegations had earlier surfaced against Vinay Tiwari, Station Officer of Chaubeypur police station in whose jurisdiction the incident took place, following which he was suspended on Saturday. It was alleged that Tiwari had alerted Dubey that a police team was on the way to his house to arrest him, following which the gangster and his men attacked the police personnel resulting in the slaying of eight of them.
