Srinagar | Jagran News Desk: In a major success, the security forces on Friday gunned down as many as eight terrorists in two different fierce encounters in south Jammu and Kashmir.

The security forces on Friday morning launched two different operations at Awantipora and Shopian districts of Jammu and Kashmir after receiving inputs that some terrorists were hiding in the region.

According to a report by news agency IANS, the slain terrorists belonged to a mixed group of both Jaish-e-Muhammad (JeM) and Hizbul Mujahideen.

The security forces said that five terrorists have been killed in the operation which is still underway at Munand area of Shopian district while three militants were killed at the Pampore area of Awantipora in South Kashmir.

"Both the ongoing operations resumed in the morning today. At Meej Pampore, after the killings of one militant, two others entered the local Jamia Mosque which is a huge structure. Forces have exercised restraint and only limited tactics have been used. Operation team is on the job," said Jammu and Kashmir Police DGP Dilbag Singh.

In Awantipora, the security forces had launched a search operation that turned into an encounter after the militants fired upon a search party of the forces, who retaliated.

The security forces said that the two militants entered a nearby mosque to take refuge inside it, adding that they used tear smoke shells to force the holed up militants out of the mosque.

The security forces, however, said that the three terrorists were killed by them while maintaining the sanctity of the religious place, adding that no firing or IED was used to force the militants out if the mosque.

"Patience and professionalism worked. No use of firing and IED. Used tear smoke shells only. Maintained sanctity of the mosque. Both terrorists hiding inside mosque neutralised," Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said.

"While conducting operation at Meez Pampore full sanctity of the mosque maintained. Local people and Masjid committee expressed happiness and thanked district police chief Mr Tahir for patience and good supervision. They also complimented Army and CRPF involved in the operation for restraint," he added.

The security forces have given a hard-hitting reply to Pakistan sponosored terrorism in the Valley. In this month, the security forces have eliminated 49 terrorists so far while 13, including Riyaz Naikoo, were gunned down in May, bringing the total number of terrorists killed in anti-terror operations to 62, in May-June so far.
