New Delhi | Jagran Education Desk: The historic Jama Masjid had its finial broken and suffered other damage in a storm that was accompanied by heavy rains in Delhi on Monday evening.
Shahi Imam of Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari said that two people were injured by stones as they became loose and fell down from one of the minarets and other parts of the mosque.
"The Kalas (finial) of the main dome fell off. It needs urgent repair to prevent further damages. Some stones of the mosque structure also loosened and fell off. I will write to the Prime Minister for immediate repair of the mosque roping in Archaeological Survey of India," Bukhari told PTI.
Delhi Waqf Board officials said a team was sent to Jama Masjid for inspection and assessment of the damage.
Delhi on Monday witnessed gusty winds with a speed of 30-50 kmph which gripped the adjoining areas of West, North-West, South, South-West Delhi.
Due to the stormy rain incidents of trees getting uprooted were reported from many areas. The iconic traffic booth at the center of the Vijay Chowk in New Delhi also fell on Monday amid the rains.
Further because of the bad weather in Delhi, Eight flights were diverted to Jaipur, Lucknow, Chandigarh, Ahmedabad, and Dehradun, Delhi airport sources said as reported by news agency ANI.
Meanwhile, following the heavy rainfall and thunderstorm temperature droped by around 13 degrees at Palam & by around 16 degrees at Safdarjung in the national capital. Between 4:20 pm and 5:40 pm, the temperature fell from 40 degrees Celsius to 25 degrees Celsius at Safdarjung, India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
