New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain, who is in hospital for COVID-19 treatment, has been diagnosed with pneumonia and is shifted to Saket's Max Hospital, where he will be administered Plasma therapy as his condition has deteriorated, reported news agency ANI. 

The 55-year-old, who had tested positive for the deadly coronavirus on June 17, is also been kept full-time on oxygen support as his oxygen saturation level (Spo2) has dipped.

"We have put him fully on oxygen support as his Spo2 level had fallen to 89 at one point, normal level is about 95. Also, he has been diagnosed with pneumonia," news agency PTI quoted an official as saying.

"We are also exploring if he can be shifted to a bigger, private facility, just in case his condition doesn't improve," he added.

Earlier in the day, Union Home Minister Amit Shah wished the Delhi Health Minister a speedy recovery. "Praying for the speedy recovery of Shri Satyendra Jain, Health Minister of Delhi who is battling with COVID-19 infection," Shah tweeted.

PTI quoted government sources as saying that those who interacted with him in the last couple of days would be quarantined as per the advice of doctors.

The deadly coronavirus has been surging at an alarming rate in the country. So far, the highly contagious virus has affected nearly 50,000 people and claimed the lives of almost 2,000 in the national capital. According to the Ministry of Health and Family, more than 21,000 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals in Delhi.

Several political leaders have also tested positive for the deadly infection. Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from the Kalkaji constituency, Atishi Marlena and party spokesperson Akshay Marathe have also tested positve for the deadly virus.

Earlier, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had also taken a test for the infection. He, however, had tested negative for the virus. Kejriwal, however, had isolated himself at his official residence in the city as a precautionary measure.
