New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: To cope up with the huges pike in coronavirus cases in the national capital, the Delhi government is planning to add around 20,000 beds across the city within a week. The beds will be made available in hotels, banquets halls and nursing homes in Delhi.   

Delhi has been witnessing over 2,000 new infections from past two days. On Saturday the national capital recorded 2,134 new cases taking the total COVID-19 tally in the city closer to the 39,000-mark and the death toll due to the disease to 1,271.

In view of this Delhi government is planning to arrange around 11,000 beds at 80 banquet halls and also to attach the se beds to nursing homes. Apart from banquets halls, around 4,000 beds will also be arranged at 40 hotels and will be attached to private hospitals in the city. The nursing homes in Delhi will arrange around 5,000 more beds. 

Earlier yesterday, the Delhi government also ordered that all small and medium multi-speciality nursing homes with 10 to 49 beds as ‘COVID nursing homes’.

"In order to avoid intermingling of COVID and non-COVID patients in small and medium multi-speciality nursing homes (10 bedded to 49 bedded) and also to augment the bed capacity for COVID-19 patients, all nursing homes in NCT of Delhi having bed strength of 10 beds or more up to 49 beds are declared as COVID nursing homes," the order by the Delhi government said.

The Delhi government had on May 24 directed 117 nursing home and private hospitals with 50 or more beds to reserve at least 20 per cent of the total capacity for the COVID-19 patients.

Earlier last week, Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia had stated that the Delhi governemnt has estimated a total of 5.5 lakh cases in the city alone by the end of July going by the current doubling rate.
