Coronavirus Pandemic: India to bring stranded back Indians from 31 countries by 149 special flights from May 16-22 | Highlights
New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 70,756 on Tuesday, while the death toll has surged to 2,293, according to the latest data by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Of the total number of cases, there are 46,008 active cases, while 22,455 people have been cured and discharged from hospitals.
PM Modi in a recent meeting with chief ministers indicated that lockdown could be eased further after May 17.
A massive repatriation operation referred to as Vande Bharat Mission is being carried out to bring back Indians stranded abroad. On Tuesday, at least three flights will operate to London, Dhaka, Manila from Mumbai and Delhi respectively.
Meanwhile, Shramik trains are being run by several state governments to help stranded migrant workers reach their home state.
The Indian Railways has announced that it will gradually restart passenger train operations from today, initially with 15 pairs of trains. These trains will be run as special trains from New Delhi Station connecting Dibrugarh, Agartala, Howrah, Patna, Bilaspur, Ranchi, Bhubaneswar, Secunderabad, Bengaluru, Chennai, Thiruvananthapuram, Madgaon, Mumbai Central, Ahmedabad and Jammu Tawi.
According to a data tracker by the World Health Organisation (WHO), the global death toll due to COVID-19 has surpassed 2.8 lakh, while the number of cases has increased above 4.1 million.
In the United States, the death toll has topped 80,000, according to a report by news agency AFP.
