New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: The Health Ministry on Monday said that a record 693 fresh cases of coronavirus have been reported in the last 24 hours across the country, taking the overall count to 4,281. It also said that out of the 111 deaths so far, 30 succumbed to the disease on Sunday.
Sunday witnessed the highest single-day jump in both fresh cases and death toll in the country.
Addressing a press conference, Lav Aggarwal, Joint Secretary of Health Ministry, said that out of the 4,281 confirmed cases of COVID-19, 1,445 are related to Tablighi Jamaat, a religious congregation held in Delhi’s Nizamuddin area last month.
"693 new cases have been reported in the last 24 hours, taking the total number to 4,281 in India out of which 1,445 cases are related to Tablighi Jamaat. 76 per cent cases have been reported in males & 24 per cent in females," he said.
The ministry said that 25,000 local Tablighi members have been quarantined and five Haryana villages where they visited have been sealed. "So far 2,083 foreign Tablighi Jamaat workers identified in the country. 1,750 of them have already been blacklisted," it said.
Aggarwal said that 63 per cent of the deaths in the country due to coornavirus have been reported among people over 60 years age.
"Number of COVID-19 deaths stand at 109, with 30 people succumbing to it yesterday. 63 per cent of the deaths have been reported among people over 60 years age, 30 per cent in age bracket of 40 to 60 years and 7 per cent victims were below 40 years age," he said.
The Health Ministry also allowed the use of Hydroxychloroquine for healthcare workers dealing with COVID-19 patients, while asserting that "there is limited evidence of its efficacy and there is not sufficient evidence to use it at community level."
Mwanwhile, the ICMR said that an order for 5 lakh COVID-19 testing kits has already been placed and 2.5 lakh kits will be delivered by April 8-9.
