New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: With a spike of 591 new cases and 20 fatalities in last 24 hours, the number of confirmed coronavirus cases have surged to 5,865 and the death toll has climbed to 169, said the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Thursday.

According to Health Ministry data, 478 people have been cured and discharged from the hospitals. 

Maharashtra has seen the most number of fatalities and the death toll in the state stands at 72. While Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh have reported 16 deaths each.

Delhi has reported nine deaths while Tamil Nadu and Punjab have reported eight deaths each. Telengana has reported seven deaths while Karnataka and West Bengal have reported five deaths each.

Andhra Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Uttar Pradesh have reported four deaths each while Haryana and Rajasthan have reported three deaths each. Kerala has reported two deaths while Bihar, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha have reported one death each.

The number of coronavirus cases have surged at an alarming rate in the country. Amid the spike in the number of cases, the Health Ministry on Wednesday said that there is no need to panic over the availability of COVID-19 personal protective equipment (PPE), but stressed these should be used rationally.

 

It also said that orders for 49,000 ventilators have been placed and their supply is underway and ten teams of COVID-19 specialists have been sent to nines states.

The Health Ministry further said that the Indian Railways has produced about 6 lakh reusable face masks and over 4,000 litres of hand sanitiser. It has also converted 3,250 coaches into COVID-19 isolation units with beds. Total 5,000 coaches are to be converted, the Health Ministry said.
