Coronavirus Outbreak: 46-year-old COVID-19 patient dies in Ahmedabad, second death in single day

New Delhi | Jagran News Desk: India on Saturday reported its 21st coronavirus death after a 46-year-old COVID-19 woman died in Gujarat's Ahmedabad, said officials while adding that she was suffering from hypertension and diabetes.    

"A 46-year-old COVID19 positive patient in Ahmedabad passes away. She was admitted to the hospital on 26th March She was suffering from hypertension, diabetes and was on ventilator," Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Hospital said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

This is second COVID-19 death reported in India on Saturday. Earlier in the day, a 69-year-old coronavirus patient died at the Kochi Medical College in Kerala. With these two fatalities, the death toll due to coronavirus has reached 21.

In Gujarat, the deadly virus has claimed the lives of four people -- two deaths in Ahmedabad while one each in Bhavnagar and Surat -- and has affected 53 after six more tested positive for the infection on Saturday, said Gujarat Health and Family Welfare Department Principal Secretary Jayanti Ravi.

"On Saturday, six more positive cases were found. Among the affected are persons from Gandhinagar, Mehsana and Ahmedabad who got infected through local transmission," she said, as quoted by news agency IANS.

The most of number of cases have been detected in the state in Ahmedabad: 18, followed by Vadodara: 9, Rajkot: 8, Gandhinagar: 8, Surat: 7 and one each in Bhavnagar, Mahesana and Kutch.

"We have covered a significant population of the state, that is 4,46,60,856 people have been covered under the survey so far in the state, carried out by ten thousand health workers in the state. The survey found travel history of total 60,708 where 50,169 had interstate travelling and 10,539 had travelled abroad," Ravi said.

The state Principal Secretary further said that Gujarat is carrying out the sample testing as per the ICMR protocols and 938 samples out of 993 have tested negative.

"The cases of home quarantine have come down from 20,103 to 19,340 whereas the number of forced quarantine in government facilities is 657," she said.

Ravi further went on to say that Gujarat has total 2,399 ventilators in which 660 are in government and 1,739 are in private healthcare facilities and the state is receiving 30,000 N95 masks and 300,000 three-layered masks everyday which are being distributed.
